Description

When "a" is followed by an "m" or an "n" it makes a whiny sound different than the typical short a sound. This is often referred to as the "whiny a." This resource reinforces the whiny a sound with CVC practice for your kindergarten or first graders (or even review for older grades)! Made for intensive intervention of mastering encoding and decoding of basic CVC words with the whiny a as the medial sound.

There are 6 separate activities and each one features bright and engaging graphics for CVC words. Included are:

  • Short a warm-up activity
  • Whiny "Aa" overview (of basic and most common short a sound in most CVC words)
  • Skywriting CVC words with "whiny a" sound.
  • Examples of rhyming and non-rhyming words with whiny "a" including feedback as to why these words rhyme or do not rhyme.
  • Phoneme finger count to segment each consonant, vowel, consonant sound using sound fingers with visual prompts.
  • Blending slides to blend 3 sounds together to encode the word. Picture cue after to incorporate corrective feedback.

This lesson is to be used with early readers and those students who are struggling with basic early reading fluency, print concepts, and phonological awareness. It can be used as a whole group lesson, in a small group intervention, or one on one for intensive support.
