Description

This Winter Project Based Learning Math resource is a budgeting and financial literacy project for Grades 6–8 that focuses on real-world math, money skills, and decision making. Students complete a winter budgeting choice board where they apply percent, tax, multi-step calculations, and budgeting strategies. This financial literacy PBL allows students to plan either a personal shopping challenge or a winter ski, snowboard, or sledding trip.

Students Choose ONE Real-World Scenario

❄️ Option 1: Personal Shopper Challenge
Students act as a personal shopper for a family with a fixed holiday budget. They research real Canadian prices, select appropriate gifts, apply Ontario HST, meet minimum spending requirements, and make trade-offs to stay within budget.

⛷️️‍‍ Option 2: Winter Ski, Snowboard, or Sledding Trip
Students plan a winter getaway for a group of friends. They compare resort prices, calculate equipment rentals, plan meals and accommodations, and determine shared costs per person while managing budget limits and optional activities.

Students Are Required To:

  • Work within a fixed budget and financial constraints
  • Use real Canadian prices
  • Apply Ontario HST (13 percent)
  • Perform accurate multi-step calculations
  • Explain and justify financial decisions
  • Adjust plans when costs exceed the budget

Perfect for middle school math, winter math projects, project based learning, and financial literacy units. This real world math project includes clear instructions, budgeting tables, and an easy-to-grade rubric.
