This is a recipe for making bird fat balls. It involves real world math problems involving proportion and money with a wildlife bird theme. Perfect for Winter Math, Earth Day Math and environmental and ecological themed math.

There are 6 worksheets with a total of 18 multi-step questions.

They can be printed in color or black and white.

Objectives:

To practice:

  • Using proportional relationships to solve multi-step ratio problems.
  • Recognizing and representing proportional relationships between quantities.
  • Using ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
  • Understanding the concept of a unit rate in the context of a ratio relationship.
  • Understanding the concept of a ratio to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.
  • Metric measurements.
  • Converting grams and kilograms.
  • Multiplication and division.
  • Money word problems.
  • Fractions

Directions:

Print out a set of worksheets for each student.

You can print out a recipe sheet and price list for each student or laminate them for students to share.

Notes:

All answers are included, so you can easily mark students work.

These questions should take students at least half an hour to complete.

Suggestions:

Your students could make the bird balls.

To make them, just melt the lard and stir in the other ingredients. Put into containers such as yogurt pots to set or shape into balls.

Use string to hang and watch the birds feast!
