Description

In this fun winter math activity, students multiply decimals by decimals and by whole numbers on mitten pennants. The finished mittens make festive, student-created winter classroom décor. Decimal multiplication problems include:

  • 2 digit whole x tenths decimal
  • 2 digit whole x hundredths decimal
  • 3 digit whole x hundredths decimal
  • tenths decimal x hundredths decimal
  • hundredths decimal x hundredths decimal

There are also 4 blank ornaments to make your own decimal multiplication problems.

Included are 44 mitten pennants, an optional student answer sheet and an answer key. 40 of the ornaments have decimal multiplication problems already printed on them, 4 are blank for your own problems. Each group of students can be given a few pages of mittens, scissors and either glue, tape or a stapler. Students can be in charge of cutting out the mittens. You may also choose to have your students color their mittens to add to your classroom décor.

Alternate teaching ideas:

IDEA 1: Each student completes a mitten that you choose.

The activity gets more difficult as it progresses, making it easy to differentiate for your students. You can choose which mittens to give to students in your class.

IDEA 2: Gallery Walk

Hang the unfinished mittens around your classroom and give every student a 4-page answer sheet (included). Students "gallery walk" by visiting the mitten problems they'd like to do, then record their work on their answer sheet. 15 minutes before the end of class, each student chooses a mitten to complete, color and re-hang as colorful winter math décor.
