UPDATED!! Use the excitement of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games to engage students in math! Interactive Bulletin Board, track and graph medal counts and answer daily math questions about the current stats each day! Adaptable for 1st-6th grade math.
Several activities are directly related to the current medal count each day! The graphs for 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, 2026 and the ALL-TIME standings are based on the old medal counts. These data sheets are provided.
Bulletin Board – Many options to create an INTERACTIVE BULLETIN BOARD. Update daily as the Olympics progress! (or just display your results afterwards.) I’m laminating full sized pages of the GRAPHS and TOP THREE countries and putting them on a bulletin board. Students will use dry erase markers and take turns updating the Top Three Countries for total medals, gold medals, silver medals, and bronze medals each day. There are also smaller versions with all four (total, gold, silver, and bronze) on one page. You can put the smaller ones in sheet protectors for the kids to write on with dry erase markers and update each day independently, in small groups, or in centers.
Track – There is a tick chart to track total, gold, silver, bronze, and total medals as the Olympics progress. There is a 2-page graph for total medals, but all of the graphs can be updated daily if you want.
Graphs – MULTIPLE Options for graphing. Graph ALL-TIME STANDINGS, TOTAL MEDALS for 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, 2026 (6 separate graphs). Graph total medals, gold medals, silver medals, and bronze medals. You can choose graphs that go up by ones or graphs that go up by bigger numbers (2s, 3s, or 4s). These can be updated daily, periodically, or done at the end.
Daily Math Word Problems – students look at the current medal standings each day and answer questions about the data. This can be as easy as simply finding the top three countries together as a class or you can require them to use the data to answer various word problems. Questions range in difficulty and from basic questions that require no calculation to multistep questions requiring basic addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, and more. They are provided in Word and PDF so you can delete or change whatever you want. Some questions are the same, but the answers will be different since the medal counts will change each day. You can do these as a center, in small groups or tables, independently as a warm-up or morning work when they come in, or as a whole group. There are multiple pages so you can use one or two pages for each day of the Olympics!
