Winter Solstice Social Studies Science Lesson | Slides and Small Group Activity is a fun and engaging lesson that covers the science behind the winter solstice as well as the different cultural celebrations centered around the Winter Solstice. Students will then apply this knowledge to creating their own Winter Solstice celebration that includes the reasoning behind the celebration, 2 traditions, and 1 activity.

This lesson was created with the week before winter break in mind. It is engaging, covers a fun holiday topic that is not specific to Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanza, etc. And is written in a way that even a substitute could walk students through the lesson.

What You Will Receive:

  • 10 page Google Slideshow introducing the topic
  • Optional link to use a Quizziz slideshow with quiz embedded (see video preview)
  • 2 page small group activity with discussion expectations embeded
  • Lesson plan

This culturally sensitive winter social studies activity is a great way for students to practice taking roles and using discussion prompts in small groups. The activity walks students through assigning roles and provides sentence stems for having a good small group conversation. It is easy differentiated by simplifying or expanding the activity. (For example, students could present their celebrations as a group presentation.)
