Description
If your students are like mine, word problems can be exceptionally tricky.
One of the things that has been most beneficial is beginning my problem solving instruction with a deep dive into how to use bar models and part-part totals to support understanding.
Students will receive direct instruction in two areas: Building visuals (Part-totals and Bar Models) that match word problems and writing equations that accurately. reflect those visuals.
Students will then have practice with the following skills
1. Identifying whether a bar model or part-total would be more appropriate for a given word problem.
2. Filling in bar models and part-totals to match word problems. (For example, making sure the total is in the correct place in their bar model.)
3. Writing equations to match their visuals.
4. Using all of this learning to solve word problems.
Included:
- A Google Slides presentation to use at the beginning of instruction (Optional and Editable)
- A PDF containing all of the activities for those teachers who want/need a printable.
- The same activities in an editable TPT Easel file
- A link to the student work in SeeSaw (also editable)
