Description
I use this as a two part homework assignment. The first day, students are asked to restate the problem in their own words, determine the operation needed to solve the problem and draw a picture to represent the problem. They are not required to solve for an answer. After they turn it in, I review their work and give feedback based on what they wrote. This allows me to guide them and help the see things that they maybe didn't see when they did the assignment. The next day I give it back to them with the day 2 assignment attached. Homework for that night is to review my notes and rework the problem, making any changes necessary. This time they are asked to provide an answer. This 2-part assignment has really helped my students think about problem solving and they have really improved as the school year progresses.

This is a great guide for problem solving...could use some sprucing up though. It did help me think through all the steps I have to remember to discuss when teaching problem solving.
