Description
I make this into a huge poster for my room. I also make copies for students to keep in their math notebooks. I
use these 3 steps as a strategy for students when they hit a wall with a math word problem. I intentionally provide tough word problems and then teach students to utilize these three steps in order to break down the barriers of understanding.
First step is basically to write short notes to help get rid of all the extra words that cause confusion.
Second step is start thinking about how numbers are related to each other
Third step is drawing a visual but only if needed.
If after the first step students know what to do then they don't need to move on the steps 2 and 3.
