Description
Are you looking for a fun, engaging, and interactive way to teach and practice solving addition and subtraction word problems? These Winter Math Word Problem Story Mats & Worksheets are a fabulous aid in helping students understand and visualize the word problems within context. Have your students add or subtract as they apply their understanding of a math problem in a 'real world' situation.
Teaching our students math in a 'real-world context' helps them to develop a deeper understanding of math concepts.
The best part about word problem story mats and worksheets is that the students are in control.
Students are handling the manipulatives which aid them to understand and answer the word problem. And as we know students who are active in their learning have greater engagement and better long-term comprehension.
This bundle includes 5 story mats & worksheet themes with each mat/theme having 12 questions (a total of 120 questions).
Each Story Mat and Worksheet set includes:
- 4 addition word problems within 10
- 4 subtraction word problems within 10
- 2 addition word problems within 20
- 2 addition word problems within 20
- 1 sheet of themed pictures to use as manipulatives - or you can use anything you have in your class e.g. pompoms, mini erasers, or linking cubes.
Word Problem Story Mats & Worksheet themes included:
- Artic - with polar bears and fish
- Antarctic - with seals and penguins
- Snowmen - with 2 types of snowmen
- Snow fun - with boys & girls having fun in the snow
- Winter fun - with boys & girls sledding in the snow.
Each worksheet includes the question, cut and paste manipulatives, and a space to write the equation. Print the addition or subtraction problem you want to focus on, provide students with glue, scissors, and optional coloring equipment, and you are set to go.
With the worksheets there are usually more manipulatives to cut and paste than needed, this helps your students focus on the numbers required and not just randomly gluing pieces on.
As students develop their skills with word problems, so will their understanding of how to organize their manipulatives to show their thinking more clearly.
Using the word problem story mats in class
- The pack includes information about word problems and how to use the story mats in your class.
- Each story mat comes in two formats - with and without an equation box - you choose whether you want your students to just focus on showing the answer with the manipulatives or if they are ready, start writing the equation (you choose what suits your students learning needs best),
- Recording sheets - extension recording sheets for students to expand their understanding of how to show the equation in different formats e.g. draw the problem, show it on a number line, show it in a tens frame box.
- 12 questions per story mat they may include:
- Joining – result, change, and start unknown
- Separating – result, change, and start unknown
- Part-Part-Whole – whole unknown, both addends unknown
To set my students up for success whether using the word story mats or worksheets, we look at the problem together, we read the problem and we look at the words that help us understand what we are focusing on (e.g. what is telling us it's adding or subtracting and what numbers are we using). This helps those students for whom reading the problem would otherwise be a barrier.
