Description

Solve the case of the missing stamp collector with this 3rd grade math Sherlock Holmes word problem Escape Room & Webscape printable and digital resource activity. Students will solve multiplication, division, measurement, and multi-step word problems. It's the perfect activity for students and teachers itching to engage in a mathematical mystery.

"Dear Watson, I've been assigned the Case of the Missing Stamp Collector. His home was found empty last Tuesday night. I need your help. You must solve the clues in the house to find where he has been taken."

To find the missing stamp collector, students must complete four exciting challenges. Each challenge includes six skill-focused math problems that students must solve to unlock clues and move to the next challenge. With each correct answer, students reveal part of a secret clue. But beware—incorrect answers reveal incorrect clue words! Students can use the clues to find and fix mistakes. Once all answers are correct, they collect an essential item to help them move closer to solving the mystery.

This activity aligns with CCSS 3.MD.D.8, 3.OA.A.3, and 3.OA.D.8, but it can be used in any classroom to review the following math skills:

✅ Representing and solving multiplication word problems involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities

✅ Representing and solving division word problems involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities

✅ Using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent problems

✅ Solving two-step word problems using the four operations

✅ Assessing the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies

✅ Solving real-world and mathematical problems involving perimeter

✅ Finding the perimeter of polygons when side lengths are given

✅ Finding an unknown side length when the perimeter is given

✅ Solving measurement word problems involving time

⭐ This math word problem escape room comes in the following digital and printable formats:

I printed this off and as my students were working I realized challenges one and two have mistakes. Two mistakes on challenge one and three mistakes on challenge two. This was time consuming as there is no answer key for the problems just the answers they are suppose to use.

Hi there!

We reviewed the activity and found a mistake in the answer choices on Challenge 2 Question 3; however, we could not find any other mistakes in the activity as mentioned in your feedback. I also checked the included answer key and did not find any mistakes. We review and professionally edit all of our activities, but it's possible things get miss things. Thank you for pointing this out so we could fix it. You can get the most recent version from your My Purchases page.

Thanks again,

Jonathan with MagiCore
