Description
How much is your word worth? Spell and Solve is a fun and challenging word work activity that can be used with ANY list of spelling or vocabulary words! Word work and math are integrated as students solve problems to figure out how much a word is worth. Each letter has a value that students have to figure out, then add the values of each letter in the word to determine the total value.
Spell and Solve is perfect for spelling, word work, and math stations and early finishers! This bundle includes 8 Spell and Solve activities, which is great for variety and differentiation the entire school year! Also included are recording sheets for 10, 15, and 25 word lists. These sheets have space for students to write the words, a number sentence for each word, the value, and answer questions. Teachers save 25% by purchasing the bundle!
A Teacher Reference page is included so teachers can quickly check the value of each letter. This can be handy if the teacher is working on math skills in a small group. I recommend printing one or more pages of the Spell and Solve page in color and laminating for durability. The use of actual manipulatives are not required, but may be used when appropriate and necessary.
Here's a description of each of the activities:
Spell and Solve with Pattern Blocks:
Students find the value of each letter by multiplying the number on each pattern block by the number of sides on the polygon. Add the values of the letters to figure out the value of the entire word.
Spell and Solve with Dice:
Students find the value of each letter by adding the numbers on the dice. Add the values of the letters to figure out the value of the entire word.
Spell and Solve with Clocks:
Students find the value of each letter by reading the time on the clock and writing the time in decimal form. For example, if a clock reads 5:25, write it as 5.25. (All times are to the nearest 5 minutes.) Add the decimal values of the letters to figure out the value of the entire word.
Spell and Solve with Coins:
Students find the value of each letter by adding the coins. Add the values of the letters to figure out the value of the entire word.
Spell and Solve with Buttons:
Students find the value of each letter by multiplying the three digits represented by the buttons in each box. Add the values of the letters to figure out the value of the entire word.
Spell and Solve with Dominoes:
Students find the value of each letter by multiplying the number on top of the domino by the number on the bottom of the domino. Add the values of the letters to figure out the value of the entire word.
Spell and Solve with Tiles:
Students find the value of each letter by finding the area and perimeter of each shape (without including a unit of measurement). Add the area and perimeter to determine the value of each letter. Add the values of the letters to figure out the value of the entire word.
Spell and Solve with Dice (Set 2):
Students find the value of each letter by adding the four numbers that appear on both of the 10 sided dice. Add the values of the letters to figure out the value of the entire word.
