Description
Students who struggle with attention, multi step directions, or mental math often are not lacking effort. They are struggling with working memory.
Working memory is the ability to hold information in mind while manipulating it. It supports reading comprehension, math accuracy, written expression, and task completion. When this system is weak, students forget instructions, lose track of steps, and shut down during cognitively demanding work.
These task cards provide structured, repeatable practice that strengthens that skill directly. 36 in total.
What Students Do
Each card presents a short number sequence.
Students:
- Read it once.
- Say it backward.
- Add the first and last number.
- Subtract the second number from the third.
They may not write anything down.
This forces students to:
- Hold information
- Manipulate it mentally
- Inhibit impulsive responding
- Sustain attention
- Monitor accuracy
The task is short. The cognitive demand is high.
Why This Works
Working memory limitations strongly correlate with academic underperformance.
These cards:
- Combine storage and processing demands
- Build mental stamina
- Improve attentional control
- Strengthen executive function in a measurable way
- Mirror real classroom cognitive load
Consistent 3 to 5 minute use builds cognitive endurance over time.
Who This Is For
- Students with ADHD
- Executive function weaknesses
- RTI Tier 2 and Tier 3 groups
