World Cup Numbers!

A 3-page World Cup activity for kids aged 7–9 that combines basic maths with football facts, making numeracy fun and relevant.

Page 1 Activity 1: World Cup Maths Six maths problems presented in colourful cards, all using real football facts as the context. Students solve addition and subtraction calculations such as working out how many players are on the pitch when two teams play (11 + 11), how many combined World Cup wins Brazil and Germany have (5 + 4), how long the two playing halves are if the total match is 90 minutes and halftime is 15 (90 − 15), and so on. Each card has a "My answer" line at the bottom. All calculations are addition and subtraction only, appropriate for ages 7–9.

Page 2 Activity 2: Fill in the Numbers A number bank containing eight numbers (90, 11, 1930, 32, 4, 48, 2026, 1) sits at the top of the page. Students choose the correct number to complete eight World Cup sentences — for example, how many players are on each team, what year the first World Cup was held, how many teams will compete in 2026, and how many years pass between each tournament. One sentence includes a bonus challenge about the number of host countries, which is not in the number bank, designed to spark discussion.

Page 3 Answer Key (Teacher Copy) Full answers for both activities, with working shown for the maths problems (e.g. "22 players: 11 + 11"). Also includes four teacher notes: a reminder that all maths uses only addition and subtraction, encouragement to ask students to show their working, an explanation of the bonus question about host countries, and a suggestion to use the activities as a class discussion starter.

Skills covered: addition, subtraction, number recognition, reading for information, World Cup general knowledge, following instructions.
