Description

This product is a practice to calculate the number of protons, neutrons and electrons from an element name and symbol.

I usually pair it with a building model and have students work in partners - one partner builds the model and the other calculates and they rotate. Free response questions on the back ask students to reflect on their work and answer questions about ions.

Cheating and copying have been huge problems in my class, so this practice has two different paper copies. The practice is designed to be cut in half so that each student receives a half piece of paper, front and back.

This product includes:

  • Practice (2 versions)
  • Key (linked at the bottom)

NGSSHS-PS1-1
Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms. Examples of properties that could be predicted from patterns could include reactivity of metals, types of bonds formed, numbers of bonds formed, and reactions with oxygen. Assessment is limited to main group elements. Assessment does not include quantitative understanding of ionization energy beyond relative trends.
