Objectives:

  • Translating a phrase to an algebraic expression and vice versa
  • Organizing the different words that describe the same operation (ex: the words minus, difference, fewer, reduce, etc. all mean subtraction)
  • Seeing Math as a language

    • Warm up exercise: “What is a language? Is Math a language?”
    • Slides on the translating a phrase to an algebraic expressions 
    • An interactive drag and drop activity matching common words to their operations (ex: dragging and dropping terms like difference, fewer, minus to the subtraction column)
    • 13 practice problems that increase in difficulty (8 mild, 3 medium, 2 hot) with provided solutions and prompts on follow up questions/discussions for students
    • Slide for partner work: “Write a phrase for your neighbor to translate into an algebraic expression (or vice versa)!”
    • Slide for 3 options for self directed learning: 
      1. Molly Teaches Math practice worksheet 
      2. Links to online practices from other online resources like IXL or Khan Academy (both mild and medium level)
      3. Links to online video help from other online resources like YouTube or Khan Academy
    • Each slide contains notes for the teacher, key areas to focus on, and prompts (with solutions) on what to ask students in the slide notes
  • A practice worksheet that aligns with the lesson with solutions

Additional notes:

The drag and drop activity will only work if your Google Slides are in Edit mode. The activity will not work in Slideshow/Preview mode. Aside from the drag and drop activity everything else will work in Slideshow/Preview mode.
