This Activity Pack is designed to help children to learn to describe characters in a coherent way and to write character descriptions of increasing complexity.
Three different levels of visual support are provided to enable children of varying abilities to describe 29 characters without adult support.
I. Sentence Starter
II. Word Bank describing what the characters do
III. Word Banks with adjectives to describe appearance and personality
In the first level, children are expected to construct two sentences using the Sentence Starters and word bank (Eg. This is a pirate, I like his gun and his sword).
In the second level, the sentence starters are removed. The children are expected to spell and write high frequency words independently. They can access a word bank for ideas on what the character do. They are expected to write 2 - 4 sentences independently with this level of scaffolded visual support. (Eg. This is a pirate, I like his gun and his sword, He can sail around the world and look for treasure)
In the third level, the children are expected to write 4 - 6 sentences and add a description of the characters personality (Eg. This is a pirate, I like his gun and his sword. He can sail around the world. He is greedy because he wants all the treasure)
This pack enables children to achieve the following objectives:
1. To be able to gender pronouns (‘he’, ‘she’, ‘his’ and ‘hers’) correctly on 4 of 5 trials, in speaking and writing tasks.
2. To be able to use full sentences to describe characters cohesively, in visually supported speaking tasks.
3. To be able to complete visually supported differentiated writing activities independently
4. To be able to use 10 adjectives to describe a story characters personality.
This pack would be useful for:
Children in Year One/ Two in the UK or First/ Second Grade in the USA who are beginning to describe characters in their stories.
Children who speak English as an Additional Language
Children who have a Language Delay or Language Disorder who may need help speaking in sentences before writing sentences.
Children who have Down syndrome or Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Children who have Dyslexia and may need lots of repetition and consolidation to read and write fluently.
Children who have been identified by the Educational Psychologist as having learning needs and require support to write independently.
