Description

In this card sort, students match word problems with equations and then solve them. It is provided in paper cut and paste format and digital Google Slides format.

The word problems are purposely constructed to be rigorous and to make students think about the operations required. All equations use the same set of numbers, so students must understand the words and operations to match correctly. Some of the equations will work for more than one story. After students match the word problems and equations, they solve each equation.

This activity is provided in 3 formats:

  • Printable Card Sort for in class
  • Google Slides drag and drop for Google Classroom online learning
  • Around the Room for group discussions

Answer key is provided. See the preview for more details!

I really liked using this resource in my class as a supplemental activity. I really liked that this activity used all the same numbers, so students really had to read the problem carefully to determine which equation represented the scenario. Additionally, the way I used this activity, was students could jump around and solve some of the problems that were a little more straight forward and eliminate equation options. So that when they went back to the tricker problems, they had less options to choose from and it made it easier to figure out which equation went with that problem.
