First Grade Hip Hip Hooray

I enjoyed a fulfilling 38-year career as an elementary educator. For 15 of those years, I taught first grade, and I also had the privilege of working with Kindergarten students and leading Gifted and Talented Education programs for grades K–5. In addition, I provided professional development for teachers across Michigan and Ohio, focusing on best practices in literacy and math instruction. Today, through Teachers Pay Teachers, I continue to share my passion for education by creating engaging, effective resources that support student learning and empower fellow educators.

I strongly believe in cross-curricular, theme-based teaching. Research on student achievement consistently shows that learning is most effective when students can make meaningful connections. When facts and ideas are linked across subject areas, students not only find greater relevance in what they’re learning but also retain information more deeply and for longer periods. Integrating curriculum around a central theme brings learning to life and helps students see the bigger picture, making their educational experience more engaging and impactful.

I am deeply honored to have been named Sylvania Schools Educator of the Year twice. Writing the state-level essays was both rewarding and reflective, offering a chance to look back on the meaningful experiences I’ve shared with students, families, and colleagues. I was also proud to be recognized as a Digital Leader in our district and to serve on the Leadership Team. However, my most treasured moments have always been the personal ones—former students stopping by to visit, heartfelt notes from parents, and fellow educators expressing appreciation for a helpful teaching tip. Knowing I made a difference—that’s the greatest honor of all.

I earned my master’s degree from Michigan State University and have continued to grow professionally through workshops, conferences, and additional college courses. During my time at MSU, I was a cheerleader and remain a proud and loyal Spartan fan. At school, parents and students always enjoyed teasing me about sports, especially since I live in an area surrounded by Buckeye and Wolverine supporters—it made for some fun and spirited banter!

I’m the proud mother of three grown sons and the grateful grandmother of two wonderful grandchildren. We cherish our time together, whether it’s relaxing at our lake house in Michigan or enjoying the sunshine at our winter home in Florida. Creating resources for Teachers Pay Teachers allows me to stay connected to the field of education—a passion that continues to bring me joy and purpose.
