Description

This product was created to help teach students how to write linear equations from word problems. The problems are modeled as slope-intercept equations. Often, it is difficult for students to learn this skill/concept.

The product starts with an example that the teacher may model for the student. All problems have similar types of questions and answers as the teacher model.

There are 6 other linear equation scenarios that the students may practice with. Each problem has all of the steps that the modelling one has (the step-by-step approach to learning). Four of the problems have positive rates, and two of the problems have negative rates. These additional problems may be completed by the students or given as a quiz.

After the students have completed this exercise, it is hoped that they can tackle word problems on their own.

I am so excited about this product, because this is something that I have been wanting to do for a long time and, finally, completed and am able to share!

Answers are included.

This product was created by Susan M. Walker.

My students benefitted from how every piece was broken down. It served us well as guided notes and practice.

I used this as reinforcement to dissect a word problem. I actually used this as sub plans since I had already taught them how to do the word problems. This assignment challenges the students to understand what the constant, rate, and variable are in a linear word problem. The only reason I did not rate this higher is that I have many students who do not want to read. I am hoping that doing more of these will get them used to it.
