Teach students to write one-variable equations from real-world word problems—then solve and check them. This ready-to-teach Algebra 1 or (Pre-Algebra) lesson targets common trouble spots like turn-around phrases (“less than,” “more than”), percent problems, and consecutive integer setups. Includes a step-by-step PowerPoint, aligned guided notes, practice, and a short quiz (1–2 class periods).

Skills & Problem Types
• Translate word phrases to equations (is, of, less than, more than)
• Set up and solve percent equations (percent → decimal)
• Set up and solve consecutive integer equations (even/odd)
• Show steps clearly and check solutions

The three main focuses of this lesson is to teach students to set up equations from phrases such as:

  • Two less than three times a number is 12
  • 56% of what number is 200
  • Find two consecutive even integers with a sum of 34
