Description

These written subtraction strategies tests were designed for Year 2-4 students.

5 subtraction tests are included:

1. Subtraction using number lines. This has 6 questions of varying difficulty.

Jump down the hundreds, tens then ones.

Jump down to the nearest 10/100, then subtract the rest from there.

  • 2 digit - 1 digit
  • 2 digit - 2 digit
  • 3 digit - 2 digit x2
  • 3 digit - 3 digit x2

2. Add up to strategy. This has 6 questions of varying difficulty. Build or jump up to the larger number.

  • 1 digit - 1 digit
  • 2 digit - 1 digit
  • 2 digit - 2 digit
  • 3 digit - 2 digit
  • 3 digit - 3 digit x2

3. Subtraction using the split strategy.

E.g. 345 - 233 =

300 - 200 = 100

40 - 30 = 10

5 - 3 = 2

100 + 10 + 2 = 112

  • 2 digit - 2 digit x2 (no borrowing)
  • 3 digit - 2 digit x2 (no borrowing)
  • 3 digit - 3 digit x2 (no borrowing)
  • Challenge x4 (with borrowing)

4. Subtraction by adjusting numbers.

Instead of 78 - 29. +2 to both numbers to make 80 - 31. Then subtract the ten/ones from here. Or -8 to both numbers to make 70 - 21. Add or subtract both numbers by an equal amount to make one of the numbers round. The difference will still be the same, but it is easier to solve.

  • 2 digit - 2 digit x3
  • 3 digit - 2 digit x2
  • 3 digit - 3 digit x2
  • 4 digit - 2 digit x1
  • 4 digit - 3 digit x1
  • 4 digit - 4 digit x1

5. Vertical subtraction (no borrowing)

  • 2 digit - 2 digit x8
  • 3 digit - 2 digit x4
  • 3 digit - 3 digit x4

6. Vertical subtraction (with borrowing).

  • 2 digit - 2 digit x8
  • 3 digit - 3 digit x4 (borrowing once)
  • 3 digit - 3 digit x4 (borrowing twice)
