Description
A common frustration for teachers is students’ lack of retention of skills and the need to constantly re-teach skills that have been covered in previous years. Not surprisingly, this frustrates students too!
The Mathsquad Homework Program is designed to give students regular opportunities to practice the skills they are learning in class, increasing retention and the efficiency in which they can draw upon each skill.
The routine and simple expectations around the Mathsquad Homework Program also makes the standard excuses for not doing homework redundant. Less excuses means greater participation, enabling students to reap the benefits of the program.
There are three main goals of the Mathsquad Homework Program;
- To maximise students’ retention of key skills
- To communicate to students and parents which skills are fundamental to students’ learning of mathematics
- To establish positive homework routines
Mathsquad homework booklets contain weekly homework sheets that cover the same skills each week.
The Foundation level mostly contains questions Year 7 and helps students develop the essential prerequisite skills for Year 8. The Core level homework sheets contain questions assessing skills mostly from the Year 8 Australian Curriculum.
This pack contains Homework Sheets and Skill Development Books for both the Foundation and Core levels. Together these include 40 homework sheets at the Foundation level, 40 sheets at the Core level and skill development pages for each skill assessed within the homework sheets.
The homework sheets provide students with opportunities to
- Increase the efficiency in which they can carry out the skills they already know
- Identify skills that don't yet know (incredibly valuable information for teachers, students and parents)
- Track their improvements in skills over time
The skill development booklets provide teachers with
- Skill sheets that directly correspond to skills assessed within the homework for easy reference
- Carefully chosen examples and descriptive solutions for each skill to guide teachers in communicating the key concepts and strategies
- (approximately) 20 questions per skill allowing their students multiple opportunities to practice and perfect key procedures
- Answers to each question to allow students to self correct
- A resource that they can share with students to enable them to self direct their learning and fill in the gaps found through completing their weekly homework sheet
More information on the Year 8 Mathsquad homework program, including lists of skills and strategies for implementation can be found here.
