"I needed a quick but engaging word family activity for my centers and this was great. I loved the visual of the house on it as I have been stressing that all the words that share the same rime are in a family together so it was great! "

"Great resource! It was easy to prep and use in my classroom. I will definitely be using it again next school year."

Description

Make CVC word family practice hands-on with cut-and-paste worksheets for sorting words and pictures into word family houses.

These CVC word family worksheets give students an interactive way to practise short vowel words, rhyming patterns and early decoding skills. Each page focuses on one word family, helping students read, match, sort and paste words and pictures into the correct Word Family House.

A simple routine for word work:

Students cut out the word and picture pieces, read each CVC word, match it to the picture and sort the pieces by word family. The hands-on format makes phonics practice more engaging while giving students repeated exposure to common short vowel patterns.

Word families included:

-at, -ag, -am, -ed, -en, -et, -ip, -ig, -in, -op, -ot, -ub and -ug.

What’s included:

  • 13 CVC word family worksheets
  • Word Family House sorting format
  • Cut-and-paste word pieces
  • Cut-and-paste picture pieces
  • 3 words to build and sort on each worksheet
  • Short vowel word family practice
  • Blackline printable format

Phonics skills students can practise:

  • Reading CVC words
  • Identifying short vowel word families
  • Matching words to pictures
  • Sorting words by spelling pattern
  • Noticing rhyming word patterns
  • Building early decoding confidence
  • Strengthening onset and rime awareness
  • Practising visual discrimination with similar word patterns
  • Completing independent word work routines

Teacher tips and classroom ideas:

  • Use one worksheet at a time when introducing a new CVC word family.
  • Add the pages to literacy centers or word work tubs.
  • Use in small groups for extra phonics support.
  • Have students read each word aloud before pasting it.
  • Ask students to underline or highlight the shared word family pattern.
  • Pair the worksheet with magnetic letters or word-building cards.
  • Send completed pages home for extra reading practice.
  • Use as follow-up practice after a hands-on CVC word family lesson.

Why this works well for early readers:

Word families help students see patterns in short words, making decoding feel more manageable. The cut, sort and paste format keeps students actively involved as they connect spelling patterns, sounds and picture meanings.
