My teaching is grounded in the EMPOWER framework: a set of guiding values I developed to reflect my beliefs about education and learning. It shapes everything from lesson design to coaching conversations:
🚀 E – Ethics: I nurture learners who act with integrity and empathy, whether they're analysing literature, navigating peer relationships, or exploring the brain. Kindness is everything.
🚀 M – Metacognition: I actively teach students how to learn, reflect, and adapt. Helping learners “hack” their own brains is one of the most powerful tools we can offer.
🚀 P – Personalisation: No two students are the same. Neurodiversity rocks! My resources are designed to meet diverse needs, especially for multilingual learners and students from underrepresented groups. I'm always open to learning more & applying that learning immediately.
🚀 O – Ownership: I embed student voice and choice wherever possible - through inquiry-based tasks, self-assessment, and reflection.
🚀 W – Ways of Learning: I draw from multiple approaches: project-based learning, cognitive science, direct instruction, and Universal Design for Learning, selecting what's best for particular learners.
🚀 E – Encourage: Whether teaching or coaching, I aim to build confidence, autonomy, and self-efficacy in all learners, students and teachers alike.
🚀 R – Rigour: I believe rigour and joy can coexist. I challenge students with complex ideas and support them to rise to the challenge.
What else?
I'm deeply committed to equity and inclusion. I keep up with research and practical strategies around culturally responsive teaching, positive psychology, student voice, trauma-informed education, and UDL through my doctoral studies. I design materials for diverse classrooms, particularly in enquiry-based and international contexts, and support schools in implementing DEIB practices through coaching and professional development.
