I have been teaching for over 20 years. I started out as a high school math teacher of Algebra and Geometry. I am currently working as an assistant teacher in a special education classroom at a private school. I work with students (ages 7 through 14) with multiple disabilities, including intellectual, physical, and behavioral challenges.
Students will practice elementary math skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, telling time, identifying shapes, finding perimeter, fractions and problem solving. Students will solve word problems with a camping theme. As questions are answered correctly, students will discover clues to solve the mystery of the the missing marshmallows at the campground. The story line is about some campers looking to make campfire treats but the marshmallows were stolen from the cafeteria.
Students will create a map of an amusement park by following directions using positional and directional words. There are also a few directions which require knowledge of basic shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, hexagon). This is an interactive Google Slides™ activity. I believe all students can learn when we teach to their style of learning, whether it be visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. I like to "think outside the box", be creative, and make learning both functional and fun for my students.
