This is the first supplemental sheet I give my beginning percussionists. Once they have gotten through learning 8th rests I give this out to save time and prevent having to turn to all the pages in the beginning of the book.
This warmup sheet focuses on the basic stroke types; full, down, up, and tap. It also includes a chop building exercise, Double Beat, and exercises to work the first 4 rudiments my students learn, the multiple bounce roll, the paradiddle, and 5 and 9 stroke rolls.
Perfect for a Christmas concert if you want to feature your beginner percussionists. This version of Good King Wenceslas is arranged for Mallets, Snare Drum/Bass Drum, and Auxiliary Percussion. Mallet parts are correlated with the first 6 lessons of the Mark Wessles' Fresh Approach to Mallet Percussion and are in the Key of Eb. All parts can be played with as few as 4 percussionists, though multiple players on the Mallet part will be better balanced.
Score and Parts included.
More advanced warm-ups and exercises than set 1.
Rennick 8s is similar to the exercised used by Paul Rennick and the Santa Clara Vanguard working on timing and full strokes at all dynamic levels.
Inverted bucks and Hug-a-da's work downstrokes, upstrokes, and tap strokes.
B Double beat is a more advanced double beat exercise to build endurance and speed and develop the double stroke roll. Students should understand 16th notes before starting this exercise.

This is my #1 warm-up for my marching percussion section! Based on the classic Stick Control for the Snare Drummer by George Stone, the battery focuses on making consistent full strokes and bass drums work on their splits. Front Ensemble Mallets work on their scale patterns with 2 mallets and on 4 mallets work on their fundamental strokes, double verticals and single independents. Score and Parts for Snare, Tenors, 5 Bass Drums, Cymbals, 2 Mallet, 4 Mallet, and Timpani.
This time of year (winter/spring) it would be easier to train an Elephant to tap dance than to motivate my high school percussionists to become more well rounded musicians. I wrote these major key exercises to work with my students on mastering all 12 major keys both in terms of key signature and technique on the mallet instruments. Included are 2 mallet exercises in all 12 major keys arranged in the circle of 5ths.
I don't only teach percussion, I also teach beginning woodwinds and brass. I have found this exercise very helpful for my beginning flutes as they learn their first 5 notes, Bb-F. It is also very helpful in getting students used to the big switch between C and D.
After my students have been playing #1 for a little while, I make it a contest of who can play it the fastest. Once they are able to handle about quarter note at 120 I switch to exercise 2.
Harmonic exercises I use with my beginner flute classes to work on flexibility and control over all registers of the flute, also improves intonation of high register. Students start on the low note and slur to the other notes listed in the slur. Harmonics are played by continuing the fingering for the lowest note of the slur and focusing the aperture and moving the lips forward to play the note.
This is a cadence I recently wrote for my drumline at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School in Orange, TX. My drumline this year has very strong bass drum and tenor players and a strong, but young snare drumline, this cadence is written to highlight their strengths. Please feel free to contact me for a recording. Score and Parts for Snare Drum, Quints, and 5 Bass Drums.
These are basic technical exercises I use with my high school drumline EVERYDAY. Good technique is essential to playing in time and playing in time is essential to playing well. These also work well for older middle school percussionists as well to further solidify technique learned as a beginner. I also use exercises from this when holding drumline auditions.
The first three exercises work the 4 basic stroke types; full strokes, down strokes, up stokes, and tap strokes. AB Double-Beat strengt
Warm-up Exercise to work various scale patterns. This exercise is based on scales in 3s, 4s, thirds, and arpeggios and also includes parts for timpani and auxiliary percussion. Written in the key of C so students can transpose to other keys.
This is a cadence that my high school drumlins plays to spell out our school name. Our initials are LCM but any 3 letters will work! Our students love chanting along with this one! For Snares, Tenors, 4 or 5 Bass Drums, and Cymbals.
This resource is kept in my students binder of how accidentals and key signatures work as well as showing the order of flats and sharps to easier identify key signatures.
