Percent Composition via Empirical and Molecular Formula determination allow students to explore the Law of Definite Proportions, Conservation of Matter, and Stoichiometry as ratios of individual elements emerge from the math. There are lots of resources that can show students how to work through the determination of an empirical or molecular formula--this resource allow you to assess their knowledge via distance learning or online learning through a MOODLE management system (or another compati

Next to simple mole conversions of a single element or compound, stoichiometry is the key to most general high school chemistry courses. It allows students to connect two simple mole conversions through the mole ratio established by a balanced chemical reaction. It allows student to see how those ratios presented by balanced chemical reactions can be used to prove that there is conservation of matter at the atomic level (as well as the macroscopic level). Once students grasp this conservation

Are students having trouble with the mathematics involved with Chemistry, Physics, or other science courses? Many students have shown up to my class lacking basic math skills that are required for science courses (multiplication, division, fractions, scientific notation, significance, etc.). This poster can hang in the room and hopefully be a reminder of those skills. The poster also makes and effort to address the mnemonic device/ shortcut of the teacher dreaded triangle math for things like d

There are a variety of ways to balance chemical reactions so long as you follow two simple rules: (1) Make sure you have the same number of atoms of each atom type on each side, and (2) reduce all of your coefficients to the simplest whole number. Personally, I have grown fond of using the Algebraic method of balancing, but some students definitely need to see things visually using Legos, marbles, or this Smart Notebook file and its infinite cloners. If you have visual students, using these

Teaching style

I try to incorporate technology into assessments to make my life easier. I very willing to let students have numerous opportunities to demonstrate that they have mastery of the course content. My goal when teaching is to use whatever style necessary in order to teach problem-solving skills.
