This lesson uses the picture book Terrible Things by Eve Bunting along with Martin Neimoller's famous quote for student reflection on the role of bystanders during the Holocaust. Students are then asked to apply the idea to their own lives. Product includes student handout with questions and a lesson plan with suggestions. In this project, students will take inspiration from your course to create a concrete action plan to improve the world in some way. This empowers teenagers to see that they do have agency and can have an impact on the world today. As this is an editable document, teachers can adjust it to match their specific course. This is a project that my students loved and remembered years later. If used at the end of the year, you do not need to require students to follow through on their action plan.
This lesson guides students to an understanding of point of view (POV) by using the picture book, They All Saw a Cat by Brendan Wenzel. This product guides you through how to use the book to teach POV and includes some higher-level questions and possible assessments. Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa are well-known for their complex city designs. This project asks students to take inspiration from these Indus Valley cities to address problems in modern cities. The product includes a handout explaining the project and a rubric for grading. It is presented as a group project, but teachers could alter it to be individual.
