The purpose of this research assignment is to give students a closer look at just a few organisms within the phylum chordata. Each student or group will collect information and create a PowerPoint on one of 5 classes—fishes, amphibia, reptilia, aves, or mammalia. Together as a class, they will create a zoo and choose the animals to fill it. The goal is to entertain an audience by finding the most fascinating creatures. This is a completely online research assignment over any National Forest or National Park. It is done in google slides. Students fill answers into textboxes, and paste pictures they find online into the slides. I like to use this in environmental science during our forestry chapter. It helps students see some of the ways forests and parks make their money, and they also get to see beautiful scenery in the U.S. that they might not otherwise even know exists.

This is a hands-on activity that leads students as they learn to balance equations. Students use Legos to represent atoms as they build molecules. By doing this, students see how a balanced equation really contains the same number of reactants as products. This gives a good visualization of what actually happens when you add coefficients. Using Legos isn't absolutely necessary for this activity because they can just draw them. However, it is much more fun with real Legos!

This assignment goes with an online simulation of a roller coaster. It gives a clear, simple visual of how potential energy and kinetic energy change as a car moves up and down the track. Students calculate the potential and kinetic energy at multiple points of the ride to see that measurements are consistent with what we would expect.

This is a great inquiry lab that allows student creativity while designing and conducting an experiment to solve a real-world issue. Students explore the combustible properties of Limonene in citrus fruits. This can be used to teach about cleaner, alternative fuels in environmental science. It could also be used in a unit about biodiversity to demonstrate why having variety is important to science. We don't know all of the potential uses for living things, so conservation is crucial.

This is a 1 day assignment where students can choose any organism in the animal kingdom to research. Students will practice using zoology terms and gain an appreciation for the vast array of animals.
