I began my career as a reading specialist and no matter what hat I’ve worn—teacher, administrator, curriculum author, or consultant—I’ve always emphasized literacy. My TPT science and social studies resources target two critical aspects of elementary school literacy—CONTENT-AREA literacy and MULTICULTURAL literacy. All of my books, printables, posters, and games focus on content-area literacy—building the specialized vocabulary of science and social studies—because having an extensive vocabulary is not only a top predictor of reading success, it also has a huge impact on overall school success and standardized testing scores. My science materials target topics and standards outlined in the NGSS and TEKS. In social studies, I concentrate on resources that develop a knowledge of and an appreciation for the diverse cultures in our global society.
My personal and professional beliefs about teaching and learning revolve around a few key themes: I believe in INTEGRATED THEMATIC TEACHING and design materials that can be used across the curriculum. I LOVE BOOKS! Content area take-home books not only help integrate learning, they also strengthen school-home connections. As a lifelong MONTESSORIAN, my materials feature real-life photographs and illustrations.
