Academic Vocabulary Matching (Print + Digital) / Editable Google Slides

Academic vocabulary is a topic I revisit with students all year long. With that in mind, I have collected 220 common academic vocabulary words and created editable, ready-to-print cards. The vocabulary words fit any content area. They are the kinds of words students may see on a standardized test. The words I included come from standardized tests, educational standards, benchmark tests, and more than a decade of students asking me for definitions. Learning 220 words at once would be overwhelmin

I recently had the opportunity to teach public speaking. While I was given a pacing guide and similar resources, I found myself looking for bell work, exit tickets, and sponge activities. With that in mind, I set out to create some quick card sorts and task cards for teaching public speaking. First, I created a speaker’s purpose card sort where students match a speaker’s choices to their purpose. To further build on this skill, I designed 16 scenario-based task cards. Then, I implemented a sp

Macbeth was the first Shakespeare play I ever taught, and it helped me appreciate how much fun your students can have while acting out a drama in the classroom. However, this experience also helped me understand what aspects of a Shakespearean drama frustrate students and teachers. Some of the characters are confusing, some scenes do not advance the plot or are not school appropriate, and some of the language is dense. For these reasons, I created an abridged and modified version of Macbeth. Ev

William Shakespeare's Macbeth is a staple in many literature classrooms. In designing an assessment for this text, I wanted to cover a variety of standards and skills students master as they read and act out the drama. However, I also wanted to make the test an appropriate length. To that end, I have designed this 25-question assessment. Teachers can use the multiple-choice questions alone, or teachers can pair them with the 9 writing prompts I've included. For maximum flexibility, the writing

My love for this play comes, at least in part, from the rich cast of characters. However, for students, the cast of characters can be daunting or confusing (so. many.thanes). Macbeth was the first Shakespeare play I ever taught, and it helped me appreciate how much fun your students can have while acting out a drama in the classroom. While I teach this unit with seniors, you could adapt this pacing guide for most high school classes. Since I believe reading is a conversation and writing is a social activity, my unit planner includes plenty of opportunities for reading and writing. As a new teacher, the thing I most needed was help with pacing, which is why I wanted

At the secondary level, it can be difficult to think about teaching reading comprehension. Sure, there's a standard for that, but there are so many other standards beyond reading comprehension. As a high school language arts teacher, I may not teach phonics or phonemic awareness, but I do teach reading comprehension skills and strategies. After a decade of teaching, these are my favorite reading strategies for high school English. Now, I've bundled them all together in one place so you have

Now that I've been teaching for more than a decade, I wanted to share my best lessons, resources, and tools for teaching To Kill a Mockingbird. All together, you will find 18 resources with mo

Dividing the book into six sections also helps me organize my vocabulary instruction. For each section, I have identified 24 vocabulary words (144 words total). The words I chose are based

Teaching style

Moore English comes from a love of curriculum design and a passion for deep-dive language arts nerdiness. As a new teacher, I was looking for literary criticism resources, abridged and adapted texts, and standards-aligned assessments. When I didn’t find what I wanted, I stopped scrolling and started creating. Now, I share my decade of experience with you. Want to introduce a complex new text? There’s a resource for that. Want to try a new critical lens? I have a starter pack for that. Want to try a new poetry collection? I have dozens of suggestions!

My own education history

I spent many years searching for my teaching style. Sometimes my searches were literal travels, but most of the time I searched for myself in literature. Other times, I searched in the classroom. In that quest, I earned my Ed.D in K-12 leadership as well as two Masters degrees in curriculum design and English literature. As I became more confident in my personal life and in the classroom, I spent more time focusing on self-reflection. During this period, I became a National Board Certified Teacher. It’s not always been an easy journey, but it’s taken me to amazing places, introduced me to incredible role models, and helped me arrive at a kind of unexpected inner peace. I’m glad my journey led me here, and I’m glad you’re here, too. I can’t wait to walk together into a better future for our students.
