In my 25 years of teaching, I have taught full day and half day kindergarten programs, Early Literacy Intervention Classes and grades 1-4. I currently conduct workshop on how to maximize each student's reading and writing potential using synthetic phonics.
I believe in empowering children through numerous and varied learning opportunities. I think that children need direct, explicit instruction, plenty of occasions to explore and experiment with what they are learning and opportunities to inquire and discover to maximize their learning potential. I also contend that teachers need to use assessment to determine each child’s strengths and weaknesses in the process of learning to read and write and that they use assessment information to direct their instruction.
