Hughes' "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain" analysis stations

There are 9 stations set up to align with nonfiction and vocabulary stations. I have taken the entire text and broken it into 9 parts. After the students read the entire text and discuss it, they then break off into groups and fill out the answer sheet. There are multiple step questions, text evidence questions, and constructed response questions.

Harlem Renaissance Gallery Walk

Here are 6 stations built for a 12th grade advanced and regular students. The standards that are aligned to each station are Indiana Common Core. However, the font in some of them may not transfer over because they were fonts that I downloaded. This was a very fun activity that took 30-40 minutes for my advanced seniors and almost a full block for my 12 regulars and inclusion.

Higher level theme graphic organizer

This is tied to Indiana Standards, but can also tie to Common Core THEME and TEXT EVIDENCE. I created this to work with my senior students while we work on theme. I made it two sided with the same organizer. On the front, we work together, gradually releasing them to do the different parts on a main text. Then, they flip it over and use it on their SSR book that I have them reading the first 20 minutes of class.

Experience

I have taught for the past 6 years. I worked in middle school teaching 6-8, and now am in high school teaching 10th grade Lab and 12th grade inclusion and advanced. I work in Indiana, so all of my stuff is aligned to the Indiana Common Core, but can easily work with all things Common Core.

Teaching style

I love making things creative and finding anything that will get the kids to be insightful and find their own voice. I have been utilizing Kagan strategies as well as Maxx strategies to create a more student-centered classroom.

My own education history

I graduated from the University of Southern Indiana with a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary English Education and a minor in Creative Writing and Theater. I plan on going back and getting my administrator's license ASAP.

Additional biographical information

I have an amazing family with two of my own children and two step children, as well as an extremely supportive and loving husband. I also have a fantastic extended family and the best friends a gal could ask for.
