About the store
True story: I once promised a kid a cartwheel if he finished his work. He finished. The cartwheel did not go the way I pictured, but we both got a good laugh and he kept showing up, which was the actual goal. That's pretty much my whole approach. I will do almost anything to get a kid invested in their own goals, and I've been doing it as a speech-language pathologist since 1997, which means I'm coming up on 30 years. My specialties are early language, autism, and speech sound disorders, with specialized training in the Hanen "It Takes Two to Talk" program and PROMPT levels 1 and 2.

Teaching style

Here's a secret about me. I am always hunting for the easiest possible activity that still gets the job done. I used to call them my lazy activities, until that started landing badly in IEP meetings. Hitting cards with a fly swatter. Reading word cards in a ridiculous celebrity voice. The kind of thing that takes me thirty seconds to set up and somehow gets a kid to do fifty more reps than a worksheet ever would. But I'll happily put in the prep when the prep is the point. Some of my favorite activities are the interactive ones where the kid physically places a card down to make a choice, because that little bit of movement is doing real work for learning, not just keeping hands busy. I lean on movement and humor, and mostly on whatever that particular kid is into that week, and I break every goal down to the smallest step so they're always working right at the edge of what they can do.

Additional biographical information

I'm a Minnesota girl, which means I spend a solid chunk of every year hoping and dreaming about spring. When I'm not working or making products, you'll find me cooking, doing puzzles, keeping up with my teenage son, and slowly learning to stay upright on my paddle board. I also sing in the shower with real commitment and quietly daydream about getting discovered on The Voice.
