The Stoop Shop Backstory: In the early 1960’s, growing up in an 18th farmhouse was a remarkable life journey. This clapboard framed home was nestled in a courtyard behind the family owned South Second Street apartment building in Wliiamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s fig tree flourished in the backyard and seemed to grow stronger amidst the soot from the coal spewed from the incinerators from the surrounding buildings. I could almost swear that It appeared the lone fig tree was being waved on to grow with sweet air from the laundry hung with those washboarded white shirts, aprons and handerchiefs. They were clothes pinned on those retractable pulleys that dragged the cotton ropes from one building to the next like pennants of proud families that immigrated to the heart of family, ingenuity and the good life. Fond memories of Macarron Park, Hersh’s corner candy store and shopping on Havemeyer Street embrace my life story. However, one special place that embodies my youth, was recalling the magic that took place at the stoop in front of that brownstone. Family and neighbors congregated by the sandstone steps attached to the three-story walkup apartment on South Second Street. The dark heavy thick stoop and railings were born from the local quarry. Originally created to prevent flooding in the parlor floor of the building and now new life. The brownstone stoop was the middle ground connector from the multi-family apartment and the street life. It was a grandstand for a soliloquy to take a stand about the rising costs of milk prices, a resting spot for mothers who wanted to shoot the breeze and exchange stories, and fathers wearing muscle tee shirts who wanted to appreciate the evening dusk to catch up on the evening newspaper minus the staple hat, suit and tie. It was an easy place for droves of neighborhood kids to rebound a Pinky ball for a quick stickball match or a starting spot to kick the can. Why the Stoop? The Stoop is a brave space for the exchange of ideas, a place that energizes a cohort for engagement and that honors the past, present and future trends. A stoop is a learning place of ideas, strategies and next steps to nurture thought for critical discourse. The Stoop is a catalyst of synergy and is actionable as a metaphor for collaboration; a transformative space to ideate, to ruminate, to grow leadership and trusted connections.
