This scavenger hunt is a great introduction to the TI-84+CE handheld or online version. It's a great intro to the calculator for middle and HS students, and for teacher workshops. Hand them an 84+CE and this four-page handout and they'll be ready to do basic calculations, work with fractions, and graph functions and data in no time. Let them work at their own pace and be there to help if they can't find the correct keys. A color-coded answer key is included.
This activity is just what you need for November 1, the day after Halloween. If your students are going bring trick-or-treat candy to school, you might as well turn it into a math activity! In this activity, students will use a pre-made TI-NSpire calculator document to enter the length and weight of 20-30 different pieces of candy. They will then create dot and box plots of the data, and calculate and analyze these statistics: minimum, Q1, median, Q3, maximum, mode, mean, Mean Absolute Deviation
What do you do the day after Halloween, when your students WILL bring in trick-or-treat candy? Turn it into a math activity! Here are two activities, one using fractions and one using percents, for upper elementary or middle grades. Your students will turn their treats into fraction or percent problems. If life hands you LemonHeads, make math problems!
The ability to display and analyze data is a crucial skill in today's world, and the TI-Nspire CX or CXII makes it easy for your math students to master! This step-by-step instruction sheet (8 pages), shows them several ways to calculate the statistical values that middle grades students need to understand: mean, median, mode, the five-number summary, and mean absolute deviation (MAD). Also included are links to resources for other related activities. Note: this is one section of my "Graphing, S

Creating colorful bar graph and pie/circle graphs is easy on a TI-Nspire! Your students can create and customize graphs, and analyze their data. Understanding data is a crucial skill in today's world, and this step-by-step instruction sheet will help them learn to do it with today's technology. Note: This is one section of my "Graphing, Statistics & Data Analysis in Middle Grades Using TI-Nspire" handbook, also available here on Teachers Pay Teachers.
TI has introduced new, faster models of their NSpire handheld calculators, the NSpire CX II and CX II CAS! This scavenger hunt (which includes a some CAS activities) is a great way to introduce Nspires to middle and high school students, as well as teachers! Hand them an NSpire CX II and this activity and they'll be ready to do basic calculations, work with fractions and graph functions in no time. This new version includes more information about graphing inequalities and vertical lines, as well
Tell your students they have to play a video game of their choice for homework and you'll get 100% completion! This PowerPoint activity asks them to analyze the action in their game in terms of the geometric transformations: reflection, rotation, translation and dilation. Why are we teaching transformations? Because they are a key element of video game design, animation, app design and lots of other STEM careers.
Need a fun two-day activity that really gets your kids thinking about two-dimensional, three-dimensional and even four-dimensional geometry? Show "Flatland: The Movie," with voices by Martin Sheen and Kristen Bell, (you can buy the DVD on Amazon for $24.95, but it's not on YouTube), which is 37 minutes long, then have them reflect on what they've seen with a written response, then they can create their own Flatland. The DVD "Extras" has a great interview with a math professor who explains the fo
Introduce your students to coding on the TI-Nspire, Innovator Hub and Rover robot with these easy-to-use programs. They can write simple tunes with "MusicLists," (your band students will be getting out their sheet music), and explore RGB color with light show programs. Explore geometry concepts with programs that get the Rover moving and "dancing." There are five different pre-coded programs in this file; your students can enter their own parameters to get the Rover to do what they want. They ca
Introduce your students to coding on the TI-Nspire and Innovator Hub with these easy-to-use programs. They can write simple tunes with "MusicLists," (your band students will be getting out their sheet music), and explore RGB color with light show programs. If you have a TI-Rover as well as a TI-Innovator hub, get the TI-Rover programs instead. These programs, and more, are included in that bundle. This is a .tns file and you must have a TI-Nspire handheld or TI-Nspire software to use the file. A
This 30-page handbook ties together everything you need to use TI-Spire technology to teach middle school level data graphing and statistics. It will show you, step-by-step, how to create bar graphs, pie graphs, dot plot, box plots and histograms, and several methods for finding mean and quartiles, as well as an easy way to calculate Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) with TI-Nspire. It also answers all those student questions about "why doesn't my graph look right?" Developed though several years of
A great first-day activity with TI-84 Plus CE handheld calculators! It can also be used with older model TI-83's and TI-84's and the new-for-2022 Online TI-84 for Mac, PC and Chromebook! (https://84plusce.ti.com/8eu/). Part 1: Getting to Know the Keypad scavenger hunt. Part 2: Performing Calculations, with 12 examples for student to work out; each example illustrates a different skill or set of calculation keystrokes, including cube roots and mixed numbers. If you've used my Getting to Know yo
What do you do on November 1, when your students WILL bring in Halloween candy? Turn it into a two-day math activity and introduce your Algebra 1 students to exponential functions and geometric sequences. You can do Day 1 on October 31, then Day 2 when they bring in their candy. This bundle includes an interactive PowerPoint that gets them thinking about eating a certain fraction of their candy each day and a Student Activity that lets them explore the concept with different fractions (common ra
Full title: Would you teach writing without word processing? So why are you teaching math without calculators? This 34-slide PowerPoint presentation can be used to convince administrators, fellow teachers and parents that using calculators such as the TI-Nspire will greatly benefit students understanding of math. Includes photos of real 8th graders using TI-Nspires in Algebra 1 classes. If you already have TI-NSpire Teacher Software, a .tns version (without all the photos) is also included. Plea
If you don't have TI-NSpires, and want to adapt the Car Depreciation Project for other calculators, here are .pdf screen shots of the TI-Nspire document. This is a great project for exponential decay functions.
Do your students have a hard time deciding what to do first when solving multi-step equations? Especially if there are variables on both sides? I have taught this process for many years, and distilled it down to Seven Steps that they middle grade and high school students can easily learn and use to solve almost any linear, multi-step equation! I've included a PowerPoint presentation that shows this process step-by-step, with four practice problems and a summary at the end. This is designed for 7
This scavenger hunt is a great introduction to the TI-NSpire CX handheld. I've used it with students (7th and 8th graders) and in teacher workshops. Hand them an NSpire CX and this three-page handout and they'll be ready to do basic calculations, work with fractions and graph functions in no time. Let them work at their own pace and be there to help if they can't find the correct keys. It was written for OS 4.0, but you can use it with other OSs. A color-coded answer key is included.
So you need to give a 50-question multiple-choice test and grade it immediately? If you have a TI-Nspire Navigator system, you can use this template and have them graded before the students leave the room! If you have already created the test, use your Nspire handhelds as “clickers.” They can read the questions from a paper test, and simply enter the correct answer on the TI-Nspire. At the end of class, electronically collect their answer documents grade them instantly.
