Adding Integers using Temperature

Created by
Bradley Heintz
In my first 2 years of teaching I found Integers to be one of the toughest concepts for students to grasp in the middle school. I tried using a rule, number lines, and tiles and for some kids it just did not click. My last resort was using a thermometer to teach the kids about adding integers. These notes / worksheet will give kids the chance to practice adding integers using temperature. Do not forget to Rate and Comment :)

This game takes the card game WAR and changes the rules a bit so that students are doing integer addition and multiplication to win a pair. It is good for practice at the end of the unit or as a replacement for worksheet practice. I have also used this right after introducing integer multiplication so that the students make self discoveries about the "odds" of a result being positive or negative.

After exploring this concept it leads them to recognizing patterns and creating rules for adding integers. This model can also be adapted to include subtraction of integers.

Just like the 100 problem time tests given to grade school students, this sheet can serve multiple purposes when trying to get students to master the integer operation rules. Time your students to see how long it takes them; set a timer to see how far they can get in a set amount of time; or have students race each other! This is great for students just learning inte
