I created this as the culminating activity for the Grade 2 Science unit Solids & Liquids. There are checkbrics as a self-assessment and the one I used to assess them. My students loved this activity and were very excited about their designs.

Aluminum Foil Boat Team Challenge

Students will work in teams to design, create, and test a structure made out of aluminum foil. The teams will compete against each other to create a "boat" that holds the most amount of coins while floating on water. They will have to make predictions, record data, form conclusions, and answer questions throughout the lab.
