A quiz? On the first day of school?! Okay, it's more of a student survey, BUT your students will perk up the minute they hear you call for quiz time! I like to give students this "getting to know you" quiz at the beginning of class on the first day to give me time to take attendance. The first day of school can be nerve-wracking for many students; I've found that having something to work on immediately gives many students that sense of normalcy and time to get comfortable in their new classroom
