Get to Know You: First Day Icebreaker Activity
Thanks for your interest in my beginning of the year paper. It’s a great way to get the know my students’ interests and I subtly throw in a random math question here or there. I like to know what my students are passionate about outside of school or try to discover their own strengths and interests.

Classroom Job Application Form
Great beginning of the year activity: Instead of having students raise their hand each week and tell the teacher if they want to be the line leader or door holder, have them fill out a job application form that describes their reasoning for wanting the job. This will teach the students real-world writing lessons on how to fill out a job application in the future. I also explain to the student that just like in real life, they can loose their job if they do not follow the guidelines.

Chess is an excellent classroom activity that can be enjoyed by students of all levels.
If your students play chess in class, but have limited time, at the end of the period they can jot down where the pieces are on this sheet, and save time re-setting the board the next class time.
