The Things They Carried: Pre-Reading Activity
This is the pre-reading activity described in my TikTok and Instagram video from August 25 (over 2 million views on TikTok as of this posting on Aug 27) Please watch it for a thorough explanation of the activity. Basically, it is a way to increase students' interest in the novel The Things They Carried before the reading and analysis begin. This will take one class period, but give yourself time to print and organize the materials a few days ahead of time.

Medieval Market: A Bartering Simulation
Students role play visitors to a low-currency market, trade goods in hand from their various professions. Will they be able to leave with what they need? Cultural simulations offer students the chance to live experiences instead of just reading about them. Problem solving and critical thinking are a big part of this work.
