Percents are not intuitive to my algebra students, so I like to give them the formula for the percent (of) change, and then have them apply it to several examples I hope they can relate to: examples of day-to-day situations that involve the use of calculating the percent of change. The file includes spiral review problems. This worksheet is intended for students to show their work on a separate sheet of paper. Instead of lecturing my students on calculating a percent of increase or decrease (percentage increase/percentage decrease), as I used to do, I now start class with a mini-lesson (15-20 minutes in length) to go over just the main idea of what they will be learning about today. I include one or two example problems so they get the main idea, and then it's their turn. As soon as the mini-lesson is over, I set them to task on this worksheet. I use this activity within cooperative groups, and I c

Percent Increase/Decrease Hands on Activity EDITABLE Yankees vs. Phillies: A hot topic in my classroom! Students use a ruler to measure two figures, then calculate the percent increase and decrease from Image A to B and visa verse. I would suggest students work in small groups for this activity. Visual and kinesthetic activity, highlights the similarities and differences between percent increase and percent decrease. There is also a challenge problem included.

Linear vs. Exponential

Sometimes students just need to practice writing equations. Here is a worksheet that allows the students to write linear equations and exponential equations from tables. They then have to decide if the function is linear or exponential and increasing or decreasing. I created this worksheet 5 years ago and every year I hear students say, "Oh, that's the difference." It doesn't take long and makes a great worksheet for after a quiz or as a homework assignment.
