Here is the problem most students have with 4.NF fractions: They add the denominators. Every time. 3/4 + 3/4 = 6/8. 1 3/4 + 2 3/4 = 3 6/8. The denominator tells the SIZE of each piece – when you add pieces of the same size, the size does not change. They multiply a fraction by a whole number and get 4 x 3/5 = 12/20 because they multiplied the denominator too. They try to add 3/10 + 7/100 without converting and write 10/110.
