Factoring Lesson 6: Factoring trinomials when a > 1 (AC Method)

Factoring when "a" is not 1. Using AC Method. Make sure to really stress the importance of creating an (organized) list of factors. This is really the only "tricky" part of this method, especially when ac is larger. A number like 120 is "large" but if student methodically generate the list of factors, it is easy. (start at 1 and 120, 2 and 60, 3 and 40, etc .... keep increasing by 1 each time. You know that you are "done" listing factor pairs when the two factors are really close together.

After noticing that 50% is half of a number and 25% is a fourth, they then learn how to find 5% of a number. This allows them to find 35%, 45%, etc. Finally, students do some real world math by estimating percents of numbers and approximating a couple tips at a restaurant. The last 2 pages are a copy o
