Concept Checklist and Tracker for Quizzes - Growth Mindset and Mastery

Inspired by Dan Meyer's concept checklist! Every quiz is numbered and has the concept written at the top. For example: #16 Solving absolute value equations. Students can score a 1-4. Students can retake the quizzes as many times as they need to! The student fills in the larger bubbles as they improve. For students to want mastery, I give them a quiz with a more complex problems and if they get that correct they get a physical gold star sticker. This is a great way to promote the growth mindset a

The notes lays out the rules with examples. I'm letting my lower chem class use it during a quiz. This also includes a self-test, a puzzle, 2 quizzes and 2 retakes. I've had to sort of shock them with the first quiz to prove to them how little they know so they'll study for the retake.

This short activity allows students to calculate their own percent error based on how well they can play "trashket ball." I used this to introduce the idea of percent error and it helped students understand that even if you get a higher number than you should have, you still have error.

Basic Terms and Definitions for Experimental Physics

A major theme throughout experimental physics is error/uncertainty analysis and analyzing precision and accuracy. Primary ways of doing so are through means, standard deviations, coefficients of determination (R^2), percent difference, and percent error. This packet gives a brief overview of their definitions and how to apply them. It makes a good reference handout to students taking a lab class.
