What goes together (a basic sorting and categorizing activity)
This is the second part to my introduction about things that go together like socks and shoes, combs and brushes, etc. In this activity students will put 2 items that go together in its appropriate box. The slides initially start of with 1 of the items already in a box so that student select what goes with it, but it eventually moves to empty boxes that children sort by which things go together.

My kiddos always have a hard time with sorting by category and finding items that are similar but not the same, so I created tons of pages for practice. This chart has categories from colors, food, transportation, and clothing. On each page there are things that belong with the named category and things that don't and a direction such as "circle all the things that are red" or "put an X on the things that are not hats"

This activity is simply about identifying circles from a field of 3, identifying triangles from a field of 3, and identifying which one is "NOT" a circle/triangle. In this activity there is also an opportunity for sorting circles and triangles and drawing circles and triangles.

This is an interactive lesson that I use once I have covered basic community helpers and what they use. In this activity is asks a question like "what do firemen drive to a fire?" It provides a visual cue like a picture of a fireman, and then choices in a field of 3. When the child selects the correct choice it models that language like "a firetruck".

This activity was a great way for my whole class to practice the concept of basic sequencing and putting objects in order. Each page has 3 or 4 of the same item that are in different sizes. The children put the items on the bench from shortest to tallest.

What does not belong (categories, negation, and differences)
This is one of 2 introductory lessons into sorting and categorization. Essentially children look at a field of 4 pictures and choose the one that is different and doesn't belong. When they select the appropriate picture it plays a reinforcing sound. The pictures begin very basic and get more complex as you go into the chart.

This activity is a winter themed way to practice 1:1 correspondence and number recognition. Children count the number of mittens on the line and the select the appropriate corresponding number.
