Whatever floats your boat - demonstrate how math helps us in real-life tasks
This activity can be used to teach practical applications of everything from early algebra through Calculus. Students will be tasked with building a boat out of aluminum foil to see how many pennies can be held. The mathematics behind the buoyancy of the boat is then discussed and the activity repeated to see quantifiably how much an understanding of mathematics helps us accomplish tasks in the real world.

Root beer Float Math Multiplication
This goes along with the root beer reading activity but this deals with multiplication word problems. I've seen struggles with interpreting word problems. I also left some practice problems dealing with finding the missing numbers and multiplications of threes. Let me know if you have trouble with the downloading and the formatting. Parachute lab with linear equations
This is an engaging hands-on STEM project where students work cooperatively as a group to construct the slowest floating parachute possible. Students are asked to record data on the height and duration of their parachute drop, then use this data to construct and utilize a linear equation. Penny Boat Lab: Density, Buoyancy and Archimedes
This is a one period activity/lab to teach students about the concept of density and Archimedes Principle, why things float. Students each get a piece of aluminum foil and design and make a boat. They then must calculate how many pennies it will carry before sinking, and then test it. This is an excellent one day STEM project that combines science, math, design and construction. Students will use the formula Density=Mass divided by Volume.

Density Logic Puzzle
This activity is a fun way for students to practice basic density calculations (p=m/v) while building in some critical thinking skills as well. Students are provided a series of clues about 7 different colored boxes and students need to determine which of the seven provided masses, volumes, and densities is connected tot hat color box.
For example, "The density of water is 1.0 grams per cubic cm. If the orange object was placed in water, it would float."

Financial Literacy- Draw out of the Hat Budgeting Assignment
A multi part assignment where students will draw out of a hat circumstances such as their occupation & monthly wage and lifestyle factors (married, kids, divorced, single, etc).
