Addition Facts Assessment: You're Doing It Wrong

Created by
SamizdatMath
Are you using those cruddy "mad minutes" or some computer based assessment program in order to assess whether your students have gained automaticity with their addition facts? If you are, then I guarantee that not only are you doing it wrong, but even worse, you're probably getting incorrect information about what your students know or don't know. The first thing you're doing wrong is that you're testing all the facts the same, for speed and accuracy. That is just plain wrong: not all addition

Order of Operations (PEMDAS)

The order of operations is a very simple concept used by mathematicians and computer programs, but is vital to correctly doing math. It is simply the order in which you should perform certain operations (like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, square roots) to get the right answer. The 90-Minute Math Block - Readers' Digest Version - FREE

This document - short - is intended to provide an educator with the basics on the four (4) elements in a daily elementary (and middle school) math program. It also includes a basic lesson plan template. The more elementary schools (Title 1 and non-Title 1) that I visit as a consultant, I am so surprised at the lack of consistency and sequitur lessons of these classrooms. It must be the lack of leadership at the campus or a belief that computer AND NOT TEACHERS are the most important currency
