In Topic D, students revisit the standard algorithm for addition, which was first introduced in Grade 2 (2.NBT.7). In this topic, they add two- and three-digit metric measurements and intervals of minutes within 1 hour. As the lesson progresses, the students transition away from modeling on the place value chart and move toward using the standard algorithm.

Divide Decimals w/Horizontal Division Bracket Mini-Lesson (5.NBT.7)

If your students are struggling to divide decimals using the standard algorithm, the horizontal division bracket is a great strategy to put in their toolkit. Mini-lessons detail step-by-step how to use the bracket, followed by guided and independent practice problems. It can be used on a smartboard or opened in a program such as Kami, whiteboard.chat, whiteboard.fi, etc. to see the students working in real-time. The following subtopics are included: Dividing Decimals by a Whole NumberDividing De

Multiplication Mat

This mat is intended to support students multiplying using partial products or the algorithm. The place value columns on the side are a space for students to show their work as they solve each place value. This is helpful for students who are using the algorithm to understand which digit to "bring down" and which digit to "carry".

I created this Smart Notebook to teach students how to multiply by 2-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. I provide students with graph paper to help them keep their place values lined up, that is why you will see a grid on every slide. I also use the term "green light zero." This is so they remember that in order to go on and multiply by the digit in the tens place, they must first add the "green light zero." You must have Smart Notebook Software in order to open this file.
